A missionary once wrote, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

He was talking about salvation, but it also applies to the question of where we get our significance.

One of the biggest problems Christians have is the battle in their mind over significance.

When Adam Eve were first created they received their significance simply in their relationship with God. When they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and "their eyes where opened" things changed. They lost that intimate relationship with God and had entered into the domain of Satan - the kingdom of darkness.

Bring it up to today -- we were all born into and lived in and were programed by the kingdom of darkness. You were trained this way from birth. You sought your significance by focusing on yourself - what you did, how much money you had, what your job was, how you looked, etc. This was life in the kingdom of darkness.

Then one day, you met Jesus, were born again, and entered his kingdom - the kingdom of God. Your life began to change as your eyes became open to the kingdom of God - John 3:3. You started doing "Christian things" instead of "worldly things", but in most cases your perception of your significance did not change. You still received your significance the same way you did in the kingdom of darkness. By what you do, what you have, where you live, what kind of car you drive, what your job is, how much money you earn, what you look like, etc. Even pastors can be guilty of this in that they may get their significance from being "a pastor" rather than simply in their union with God.

In the kingdom of this world (the kingdom of darkness), there are thousands of choices offered to us by Satan.

He asks, "would you like to be famous? Would you like to be rich? Would you like to be a great athlete? Would you like to own a large business? Would you like to have an attractive body and wear fashionable clothing?"

He also offer things to people who don't want to compete with others such as use of drugs or alcohol or simply "dropping out".

The list goes on: He says, "Use your attractive body to gain attention and follow the fashion trail. Or, busy yourself with recreation activities that become an idol rather than your relaxation. Worship at the shrine of the stock market, or sleep around and enjoy your sensuality.

Find something to do that makes life have momentary meaning.

Most of us have been programed and conditioned by our training in the kingdom of darkness and when we come to Jesus we carry that programing with us. That is why the Apostle Paul told us in Romans 12:1-2 "not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind".

There is a great battle going on for the control of your thinking. Satan wants you to conform to his worldly kingdoms ways and God wants you to be conformed to Jesus.

Your Father in heaven wants you to get your significance from your union with Him, being His child in His family, not the way the world (kingdom of darkness) gets theirs.

Think about it.

Where do you HONESTLY get your significance from??

Until next time, may the Lord fill you with His peace.
