Jesus said "I am the good shepherd; and I know My own, and My own know Me." John 10:14.

He also said, "...the sheep follow Me because they know My voice." (vs.4)

He also said, "; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep." (vs.11)

Psalm 23:1-4 -- "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His names's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me."

When Jesus tells us He is the Shepherd in our lives He is telling us that He is taking responsibility for the oversite of our lives.

Look what the duties of a shepherd really are:

  • He watches over the sheep of His flock
  • He knows his sheep and his sheep know Him and will follow no other
  • His sheep know his voice - they recognize it when he speaks
  • The shepherd gives up his life for the welfare of the sheep
  • The shepherd leads - he does drive them like a herd of cattle
  • The shepherd makes sure the sheep have food and water
  • The shepherd keeps the sheep in a state of restfulness
  • The shepherd protects the sheep from all forms of danger

When we look at the description of what a true shepherd does and that Jesus tells us He is the good shepherd over His flock, we see that He is assuming the position of our caretaker. He leads us, He speaks to us, He feeds us, He protects us. He becomes everything we need in this life. Sheep do nothing on their own; they always look to the shepherd for His instructions.

When we find ourselves troubled in life instead of trying to find the solutions to all of our problems Jesus says "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. " (Matthew 11:28-29)

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

Isaiah 26:3 -- tells us that if we keep our mind focused on Jesus, He will keep us in perfect peace because we trust Him.

When psalm 23 says he "restores my soul" he is saying that He will calm our emotions, setting our minds, take away any confusion and bring us into a state of restfulness as though we were lying down in an oasis of green pastures beside still calm waters. That is the life Jesus wants us to live -- at peace with everything around us and fully confident that HE as our Good Shepherd will be everything we need.

Isn't it amazing to you that Jesus is willing to take on that job in our lives?

Jesus is the Good Shepherd in our lives and He wants our eyes open to the reality that the kingdom of heaven is at hand now -- go there.
