Successful Living as a New Creation in Christ

The kingdom of darkness is that sphere of influence where Jesus Christ is not Lord. It is the realm in which human beings bow their knee to something other than Jesus. It could be a false deity, it could be total self-centeredness in which a person is only seeking their own desires, it is seeking after something or someone whom we consider more important than Jesus. The real master of this kingdom is Satan. The Bible says he can come as, or manifest himself, as an angel of light; or an spiritual entity that is very attractive to us.

This attitude is what the Bible calls SIN because the essence of sin is rebelling against God's right to rule, or His right to be in charge and determine what is right and wrong, or good and evil. When we as human beings, the creation, reject God's, the Creator, right to rule we set ourselves up in the position of being a god unto ourselves.

Let me give you an example of this setting ourselves up to be the determiner of what is good and evil, or right and wrong. Suppose you are an adult and you have a baby, an infant. Who make the rules and determines what is right and wrong for this little child? Is it you, the parent and creator of this child, or is it the child, the being that you created and gave it life through the birth process? Does the parent simply give the infant life and then abandon it, or does it nurture, protect, and care for it? That is the relationship God had with His created humans. He was the parent and simply wanted to be loved and obeyed by His creation. Don't you, as a parent, want your children to love you and obey you? When the creature breaks off this relationship it chooses to go its own way and begins life in the darkness ruled by Satan. As we live our lives in that darkness we take on the nature of the prince of that darkness because we always become like those we hang around. Good companions influence you towards good actions and evil companions influence you toward evil actions. As we have lived our lives in the kingdom of darkness we have taken on the nature of that kingdom -- that nature is what is called SIN because it is a nature that denies God the right to be God in our lives and determine what is best for us as His creation.

The chief characteristic of that nature is being "self-centered". This nature has evolved into a religion in the kingdom of darkness called "humanism", or the belief that we as humans are in total charge of what goes on in my life. It is the swallowing of the "lie" that Satan offered Adam and Eve --- our eyes will be opened and we will be like God knowing what is good and evil. In other words we will be self determining and make all our own decisions and determining what is best for ME and deciding myself what I determine to be right or wrong, or good or evil. In the Book of Revelation the writer, John, tells us that there is a "mark" [ 666 ] that will identify everyone who is in the kingdom of darkness because this mark represents the epitome of man's self-determination apart from God. This symbolic mark is said to be placed on our forehead or our hand. Our hand represents our activities and labors. The forehead represents our thoughts. If Satan can control your thoughts and your actions He has you under his control as his slave. This is the kingdom of darkness.

God's plan for mankind was to be in union with him, have His life flow through him, and allow him to rule over the entire creation on earth. But when Adam chose to disobey God he forfeited his union with His Creator and experienced a condition called "death". This death was the absence of the life of God because "the wages of sin is death." Man was now destined to live on a planet that became a hostile environment for him. Because he lost the life of God from within him he lost his feeling of significance from being in union with God and being the ruler over all that God had created and he had no relationship with his creator anymore. He had lost his purpose for which he had been created. It is as though he lost his way and didn't know where he was going. He was like a man in a forest at night. He could not see because he was experiencing darkness all around him. This is the kingdom of darkness. A place where we don't see the consequences of our actions.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4: "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

Where did the kingdom of darkness come from?

That is a good question, because it didn't come from God.

Let me try to explain.

At some time in the distant past there was a rebellion in heaven and Lucifer was expelled from heaven and he established his own kingdom? Lucifer had said in his heart that he would exalt himself and become equal to or greater than God Himself. He led about one-third of the angels into this rebellion against God and, in fact, established his own kingdom that the Bible calls "the kingdom of darkness". As of that time there were two kingdoms in the universe: One of light, called the kingdom of God, and one of darkness.

The primary thing that caused Lucifer's fall was rebellion, or self-centered disobedience. Wanting to be equal to or greater than God. When we examine the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden we see that the exact same attitude was demonstrated. Remember, the temptation given to Eve was "your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." That rejection of God's rule was an act of rebellion to God and His kingdom rule and that is the essence of the kingdom of darkness. When we reject God's rule in our lives it results in choosing to enter the kingdom of darkness ruled by Satan. Whether we think it's right or wrong we will always be under the rule of either God or Satan. It is our own choice. Every action we commit or thought entertained or word spoken is a matter of our free choice. The fact that we were created as a spirit, with a soul, and living in a human body and that we have this freedom of choice is what makes us like God because we were created in His likeness and image.

The Scripture says in Romans 6:16 -- "Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves of obedience, you are slaves to the one whom you obey, either in sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?"

This scripture tells us how Satan gained control of all the kingdoms on the earth. Adam gave his authority over to Satan by obeying him and becoming his slave.

So, when we willfully choose to reject God and His ways we choose to sin and and stay in that sinful condition that sin leads to eternal separation from God.

James 1:14-15 -- "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death."

Romans 6:23 -- "For the wages of sin is death, ..."

Now, after these thoughts, we might think that God is very cruel to force us to have to obey Him, but that is not the truth. That is a thought that is used by Satan to deceive us into rejecting God's will in order to keep us in his kingdom of darkness.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4: "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

2 Corinthians 10:5 -- "We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ."

John 3:16 - 20 -- "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed."

The characteristics of life in His kingdom are:

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • power

"in the Holy Spirit". The kingdom of God is "in the Spirit".

See Romans 14:17 and 1 Corinthians 4:20.

Galatians 5:22-23 -- "But the fruit of the Spirit is:

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • patience
  • kindness
  • goodness
  • faithfulness
  • gentleness
  • self-control;..."

The characteristics of the lifestyle in the kingdom of darkness:

Galatians 5:19-21 (Living Bible) -- When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear:

  • sexual immorality
  • impurity
  • lustful pleasures
  • idolatry
  • sorcery (drugs)
  • hostility
  • quarreling
  • jealousy
  • outbursts of anger
  • selfish ambition
  • dissension
  • division
  • envy
  • drunkenness
  • wild parties
  • and other sins like these.

Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (Living Bible) -- Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat peoplenone of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.

WHICH SET OF CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU WANT IN YOUR LIFE? The choice is up to each one of us.

God is the supreme authority and power in the universe. No created being can ever be equal to or greater than God. To rebel against Him is the ultimate of pride and insanity.

Can you honestly say that you want to choose the kingdom of darkness lifestyle to the benefits of the kingdom of God? If you do, then according to 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 your mind has been blinded by the god of this world, Satan, and you have chosen to believe his lies to you.

You are his slave.

It was never the Father's intention for humans to become slaves in Satan's kingdom of darkness, it was His desire that humans be in union with Him and to enjoy relationship and fellowship with Him. Let's go to the next page of our study - Union with God was the reason humanity was created.
